Bible Witness (BW) Magazine is a bimonthly publication of Gethsemane Bible-Presbyterian Church, Singapore. The BW Magazine has been in production since 2001. With the 20th anniversary in 2021, the idea of changing the look of the magazine was tabled.
Since its initial publication in 2001, the BW Magazine actually underwent minor iterative changes over the course of its production. From using different papers to slight changes of the logo, the design changes of the magazine have been relatively muted.
For the anniversary re-design, the most obvious change is in the cover page of the magazine. The newsletter like cover design has been scrapped in favor of a full-page, seamless design. The result is a more eye-catching, graphic-focused cover.
The second change is in the contents page of the magazine. The original design of the magazine had the content page on the inside cover of the magazine, with the editorial team and publication information on the sidebar and bottom of the page respectively.
The new design places the contents on the facing page instead, with the inside cover reserved for advertorials and a short description about the cover page’s design.
The third key change is the typography and layout of the magazine. The original design had the magazine looking like a newsletter. A large image would serve as the main image, and the article would just follow after the image.
What I opted to do instead was to have the images integrated with the text in a tighter fashion. Additionally, I had “pull quotes” (or “callouts”, as some might call them) interspersed with the article text. For example, if a key word was emphasized in the article, I would have that text ‘pulled out’ as a page layout graphic element as well.
